About

The Great Adventure Lab is an after-school science enrichment program that runs in 50+ schools in the DC area. We’ve taught thousands of kids how to write their first robotics programs or video game programs (or both!). This is our fourth school year!

We do it all with SMALL class sizes (adult-student ratio = 6:1) and highly skilled teachers, many of whom have or still work as scientists or engineers. Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering and mathematics irresistably FUN for the next generation. Kids leave our classes demanding MORE!

You can read all about our classes and birthday parties on our web site  http://www.thegreatadventurelab.com. Our site includes plenty of reviews, photos and links to videos from our classes!

We are an LLC based in Silver Spring, MD. We are fully insured and our instructors have passed background checks including FBI and state fingerprinting.

Here are mini-descriptions of our Spring 2014 offerings at Wood Acres ES. Please follow links for complete details, including photos!  Room numbers TBD. Instructor will send welcome email several days before class.

These activities are not sponsored by, associated with, or endorsed by MCPS or Montgomery County Government.

Five- and six-year-olds: we know you’re ready to learn engineering concepts, too! Early Engineers students use LEGO® DUPLO Simple Machines Education kit designed for ages 5+ to learn and explore mechanical concepts by building seesaws, spinning tops, and more.

GRADES 3–5  Thursdays 3:15-4:15pm

April 24, May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, June 5

Young Engineers

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Course Structure and Fees: 1 instructor, 1 aide. Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week. $125 plus $30 materials fee per student. Min. 11 / max. 14 students. See parent aide requirements here: http://thegreatadventurelab.com/parent-aides/

Lots of people follow recipes for 30 years and still can’t cook. We don’t want that to happen to your budding engineers. In this class, kids learn basic engineering concepts by designing and building cool projects like bridges, egg drops safety-devices, and working catapults that are almost as large as your child!

Class meets indoors, but we’ll periodically venture outside to test out what we build. Each student takes home his or her own catapult.

Grades 3–5   Tuesdays 3:15-4:15pm

April 22, 29, May 6, 13, 20, 27, June 3

Video Game Programming 1

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Areas of Exploration: Programming, Multimedia, Storytelling, Music, Logic.

Course Structure and Fees: 2 instructors. Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week. $135 plus $5 materials fee per student. Min. 11 / max. 12 students.

Does your student dream of writing his or her own video games, creating cartoons, or making animations? We’ve found a great way to get started: Scratch, the super-simple drag-and-drop multimedia programming language designed by MIT’s Lifelong Kindergarten project. The Great Adventure Lab’s trained instructors can teach your child how to make characters walk, talk, and interact with a keyboard/mouse or other programmed characters. Each student will build his or her own game.

Grades K-2  Wednesdays 3:15-4:15pm

April 23, 30, May 7, 14, 21, 28, June 4

Storybook Science 4

Areas of Exploration: aerodynamics, biology, physics, geology, archaelolgy, chemistry, and more!

Course Structure and Fees: 1 instructor, 1 aide, Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week. $115 plus $20 materials fee per student. Min. 11 / max. 14 students.

All new stories!  Mythbusters insn't just for big kids.  In this class we'll read a different story each week to our scientists and then conduct hands-on science experiments to test the truthfulness or recreate certain elements of each story!
